What is Family Physician?
Family physicians are dedicated to treating you as a whole person. Unlike other physicians who specialize in treating one particular organ or disease, Family Physicians are uniquely trained to care for you as a whole person, regardless of your age or sex. The cornerstone of family medicine is an ongoing, personal relationship between you and your doctor. We will work together to achieve the best possible health outcomes in the most cost-effective manner.
In addition to diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, your family physician provides routine health screenings and will counsel you on lifestyle changes to prevent illnesses before they develop. And, if a health condition arises that requires care from another specialist, your Cleveland Clinic Family Physician will be there to guide you and to coordinate all aspects of your care. S(he) will guide you skillfully through the health care maze should you require the care of several specialists.
Following medical school, family physicians complete a formal three-year residency during which they receive training in care for patients of all ages from infancy to elderly in several major medical areas including:
- Chronic conditions, such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease.
- Acute problems like respiratory infections, chest pain, abdominal pain and headache.
- Preventive care including chronic disease screening and immunizations and advice about how to stay healthy through proper diet, exercise.
- Ear, nose and throat care.
- Minor surgical procedures.
- Bone and joint care.
- Skin conditions.
- Well-woman care, reproductive counseling, family planning.
- Mental and behavioral health issues such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse and insomnia.
- Many other common ailments and conditions.
What Does a Family Practice Doctor Do?
Family physicians who work in community health settings deliver a wide range of care services. Among other things, they offer:
- Routine checkups, including well-baby and child visits
- Health risk assessments
- Immunizations

- Treatment of common chronic conditions
Family practice doctors can also specialize in areas including sports medicine, emergency and urgent care, and public health. Doctors provide general care and coordinate with specialists as needed.
Reasons to See a Family Practice Doctor
You can see a family practice doctor for:
Chronic disease management
Family medicine doctors can treat and monitor various chronic diseases and conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), kidney disease, heart disease, high cholesterol, arthritis, skin problems, and breathing issues caused by conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They can also prescribe or refill medications to treat chronic conditions, often coordinating with specialists.
Care for illness or injury
When you or a family member is sick or injured, a family medicine doctor can often treat the condition independently, without the need for specialist intervention. Examples include simple fractures and sprains, flu and cold symptoms, pneumonia and bronchitis, stomach viruses, seasonal allergies, ear infections, and so on.
Routine exams
Family medicine doctors perform various routine exams, including annual physicals, newborn and well-child checkups, sports physicals, men’s health screenings including prostate exams, and female pelvic exams, including annual pap smears.
