Home Remedies for High Fever in Children – Do’s and Don’ts

Fever is common in children and can occur when the body is fighting an infection. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or sometimes after vaccination. Seeing your child with a high temperature can be worrying for you as a parent, but in many cases, fever is the body's natural way of fighting illness. While mild fever can be managed at home, it's important for you to know what to do and what to avoid to keep your child comfortable and safe.

Do’s:

• Keep your child hydrated: When your kids have a fever, they might lose more fluids through sweating. You need to make sure your child brings enough fluids, such as water, rehydration solutions, or other fluids.
• Give plenty of rest: Rest is very important when your child has a fever. You can encourage your child to sleep and relax so that the body can focus on fighting the infection.
• Dress your child comfortably: Dress your child in lightweight, breathable clothing. Excess layers can retain heat, increasing body temperature.

Don'ts

• Do not use ice water: A very cold bath or ice pack may seem like an easy way to lower a fever, but they can actually cause your child to shiver.
• Do not force food: Kids with fever often lose their appetite; rather than forcing large meals, offering small, mild foods like soups or soft dishes works better.
• Do not give medicines without advice: If the fever becomes extremely high and persists beyond a few days, or if it's accompanied by symptoms such as difficulty breathing or profound weakness, do not disregard these indications; seek medical attention promptly.

Fever and kids can often be managed at home with simple care, such as hydration, rest, and comfortable clothing. These steps can help your kids feel comfortable as their bodies fight the infection.
